Nokia India Ltd is not only the best-selling brand of mobile phones in India, but also a major player in the field of network maintenance for mobile phone service providers. The design brief by the client was lucid—the small space available (between 200-450 sq m for each location) was to be used in the most efficient way possible. The design solution had to reflect the philosophy of the company- “Connecting People”, by creating informal, relaxed spaces for interaction alongside comfortable, ergonomic working spaces, all designed as an antidote to the pressures associated with the work of maintenance and trouble-shooting done in these offices.

While the requirements for these offices in eight different locations were similar, the conditions at the sites were varied. The successful integration of high-end Information Technology, inherent to the very nature of their work, was as much a challenge as achieving the same quality of fit-and-finish in varied locations.

Intelligent space planning, supported by thoughtful integration of lighting, HVAC and Information Technology, has successfully addressed the issue of functionality. Cheerful, vibrant colours on the wall and digital prints were used to create a space designed for a workforce that is getting younger everyday. Raised wooden flooring in the cafeteria (termed as the “plaza”—where all visitors are entertained) differentiates it from the rest of the office. A new concept of the “Quiet Room”—a small booth equipped with a worktop and a phone for long (and occasionally, loud) phone conversations required to be carried out without disturbing others was introduced. Flip-top access panels for utility connections on the table tops and frameless glass partitions with framed doorways to emphasize the openings were the typical design elements for these offices.

These projects are representative of the new work culture and environment that many multi-national companies are trying to achieve. The focus of the organization is to produce world-class products and provide world-class services. It was the architects’ job to create an environment that is equally conducive for achievement of this goal. What sets these offices apart is the character—purposeful and comfortable yet vibrant and energet.
